Abstract
Hydracrylic esters or their alkoxy derivatives are converted to acrylic esters by heating in the presence of dehydrating agents, e.g. sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, and silica gel. Polymerization of the products may be suppressed by the addition of stabilizers such as hydroquinone, naphthols, sulphur, copper, and copper compounds. Further, salts or metals or mixtures thereof which facilitate the reaction may be added; suitable materials for this purpose are sulphates, phosphates, and borates, iron, and copper. In examples, (1) hydracrylic acid ethyl ester is passed in vapour form over silica gel saturated with sulphuric acid and (2) the vapour of b -methoxy propionic acid methyl ester is passed into concentrated sulphuric acid containing small quantities of ammonium sulphate and hydroquinone.
