A salt of a sulphuric ester of a naphthohydroquinone or alkyl naphthohydroquinone is prepared by heating the hydroquinone with excess sulphamic acid in suspension in a tertiary amine, e.g. pyridine, quinoline, or dimethylaniline. A reaction temperature of 100 DEG C. is preferred. The resultant ammonium salt may be treated with a metal hydroxide to give the corresponding metal sulphate. In example 1, 2-methyl-1 : 4-naphthohydroquinone is treated with sulphamic acid in pyridine at 95 DEG C., and the product treated with aqueous potassium hydroxide to give dipotassium 2-methyl-1 : 4-naphthylene disulphate dihydrate. Example 2 is similar, but includes the preparation of 2-methyl-1 : 4-naphthohydroquinone by hydrogenation, in the presence of a palladium catalyst, of 2-methyl-1 : 4-naphthoquinone. According to the Provisional Specification, the process may be applied to any compound containing two phenolic hydroxyl groups attached to the same nucleus.
