Abstract
2-Alkylaminobenzene - 1 - carboxylic acid - 4 - sulphonic acids are manufactured by reacting an alkylamine with 2-chlorobenzene-1-carboxylic acid-4-sulphonic acid in aqueous solution at an elevated temperature (exceeding 50 DEG C.), advantageously with the addition of copper or a compound thereof as catalyst. Examples describe the reaction of (1) 2-chlorobenzene-1-carboxylic acid-4-sulphonic acid with methylamine, with or without metallic copper as catalyst, at 130 DEG C.; (2) the sodium salt of the acid with n-butylamine at 120 DEG C. in the absence of a catalyst; (3) the sodium salt of the acid with ethylamine at 110-120 DEG C. in the absence of a catalyst; the ethylamine may be replaced by n-propylamine, isobutylamine or isoamylamine. 2-Chlorobenzene-1-carboxylic acid-4-sulphonic acid is obtainable by oxidizing 2-chlorotoluene-4-sulphonic acid with potassium permanganate.
