Abstract

Compounds of the general formula R--CONH--X where R=a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radical of at least 6 carbon atoms and X=a polyhydroxylated alkyl group free from ether groupings when treated with sulphuric or phosphoric acids or derivatives thereof are useful as dispersing agents.ALSO:Detergents and wetting agents are made by converting compounds of the general formula R--CO--NH--X where R=a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radicle containing at least 6 carbon atoms and X=a polyhydroxylated alkyl group free from ether groupings into its sulphuric or phosphoric ester. They are also useful as dispersing, softening and dissolving agents. In examples (1) and (2) b b <1>b <11>-trihydroxy-tert.-butylstearamide is dissolved in sulphuric acid and treated with oleum or syrupy phosphoric acid in presence of boric acid; (3) and (4) coco nut oil fatty acid or stearic acid is heated with b #c-dihydroxy-n-propylamine and the amide heated with sodium pyrosulphate in pyridine. Other esterifying agents specified are halides of the acids, e.g. chlorsulphonic acid and phosphorus oxychloride or anhydrides, e.g. pyridine-sulphur trioxide and phosphorus pentoxide. Glucosamine and the polyhydroxy amines obtainable from glycerol may also be used as starting materials. b b <1>b <11> - Trihydroxy - tert. - butylstearamide is made from stearic acid and b b <1>b <11>-trihydroxy-tert.-butylamine. b #c - Dihydroxy - n - propylamine is made from glycide and ammonia.
