Abstract
A process for the production of a -methyl indoles comprises reacting acetone with an aromatic hydrazine of general formula <FORM:1098977/C2/1> or a salt thereof, in which R denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical at elevated temperature in the presence of a strong mineral acid used as an acid condensing agent and in the presence of boric acid. Suitable strong mineral acids are H2SO4, H3PO4 and HCl. Boric acid is used in amounts of 1 to 20% by weight based on the amount of strong mineral acid used.
