523,549. Wetting &c. agents; mercerizing processes. ELLIS, G. B. (Chemical Works, formerly Sandoz). Jan. 4, 1939, No. 287. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] The wetting power of mercerizing lyes is increased by adding thereto a polyethermonocarboxylic acid or an alkalimetal. organic ammonium or amino salt thereof of the general formula R (OR 1 )nOR 2 COOH wherein R is an aliphatic radicle or a cycloaliphatic radicle which does not contain more than nine carbon atoms, R 1 and R 2 are alkylene radicles and n is a positive integer. The wetting agents may be used in association with known assistants such as phenols, aliphatic carboxylic acids having 4 to 9 carbon atoms, alkoxyacetic acids, naphthenic acids, highly sulphonated oils, sulphuric esters and alkylated aromatic di and polysulphonic acids. They also emulsify in the alkali lye assistants such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, ether-alcohols, ketones, acetals, and nitrogenous bases such as aliphatic amines and hydroxy amines. In examples the following compounds or mixtures are used in mercerizing lyes: (1) n-butoxyethoxvacetic acid in admixture with (a) the condensation product of glycide with di-#-oxyethylamylamine, (b) naphthenic acid and xylenylglycerine ether, (c) naphthenic acid, sodium isoamyloxyacetate and xylenylglycerine ether, (d) technical xylenol and (e) iso-amyloxyethoxy acetic acid and di-#-oxyethylamylamine, (2) #-(#<SP>1</SP>-n-butoxyethoxy) ethoxyacetic acid and the corresponding α-oxypropionic and α-oxybutyric acid derivatives, (3) iso-amyloxyethoxy acetic acid and (a) xylenylglycerine, (b) the mixture of acetates obtainable from the methylcyclohexanones and glycerine, (c) high boiling technical xylenol, (d) n-butyl sulphuric acid ester, (e) ethyleneglycolmono-n-butylether sulphuric acid ester, (f) cymenesulphonic acid, (f) diethyleneglycolmono-n-butylether and the sulphonated mixture of laurylalcohol, cresol and isoamylalcohol, (g) the product obtained by sulphonation and condensation of #-naphthol and isoamylalcohol, (4) #-(#<SP>1</SP>-n-butoxyethoxy) ethoxyacetic acid and isovalerianic acid, (5) ethylbutoxyethoxyacetic acid (6) octyloxyethoxyacetic acid, (7) sec. amyloxyacetic acid, (8) isopropoxyethoxy acetic acid and diethanoln-butylanine or diethyleneglycolmono-n-butylether. Specifications 427,899 and 452,866 are referred to. Polyethermonocarboxylic acids having the above formula may be prepared by condensing the alkali salts of mono or polyetheralcohols with monohalogen alkylcarboxylic acids. Thus, isoamyloxy ethoxyacetic acid is prepared from monoisoamylglycolether sodium salt and monochloracetic acid.
