Abstract

The invention comprises diethylaminoacetyl-4-chloro-2 : 6-dimethylanilide and the corresponding 4-bromo compound; their watersoluble salts; and their preparation by reacting a halogen-acetyl-4-chloro or bromo-2 : 6-dimethyl-anilide with diethylamine. This process may be combined with the preparation of the anilide starting material, which need not be isolated, by reacting a halogen-acetyl chloride or bromide with 4-chloro-or-bromo-2 : 6-dimethylaniline. The former reaction may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene or acetone, or in an excess of the diethylamine, and the latter reaction may also take place in a solvent such as one of the above-mentioned solvents or glacial acetic acid, and in presence of an acid-binding agent, e.g. an inorganic or tertiary organic base, or in an excess of the halogen-2 : 6-dimethylaniline; alternatively, an acid-binding agent, e.g. sodium acetate, may be added after the reaction. Examples are given. 4-Chloro-or-bromo-2 : 6-dimethylaniline is obtained by direct chlorination or bromination of 2 : 6-dimethylaniline, in, for example, glacial acetic acid, carbon tetrachloride or chloroform.
