Abstract

Ninhydrin is prepared by oxidizing 2-hydroxy 2 - methylmercaptoindan - 1,3 - dione of the formula <FORM:1035180/C2/1> with chlorine or bromine, preferably in aqueous suspension. Examples of the use of both chlorine and bromine are given. 2 - Hydroxy - 2 - methylmercaptoindan - 1,3-dione, used as starting material, is obtainable (1) by aqueous hydrolysis of 2-chloro-2-methylmercaptoindan-1,3-dione or (2) by condensing a phthalic acid diester with dimethyl sulphoxide in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate, and rearranging the product with sulphuric acid. Examples of both these processes are given.
