Abstract
Tetrafluoroethylene is obtained by pyrolysing chlorodifluoromethane in the presence of water vapour under substantially adiabatic conditions in a reaction zone the temperature of which is produced mainly by simultaneously mixing and introducing preheated HCClF2 and superheated water vapour, the water vapour being present in an amount of 70-90 mole per cent of the total gaseous mixture. The reaction zone preferably has a surface to volume ratio of less than 130 m-1. Preferably the HCClF2 is preheated to 400-550 DEG C. and the H2O superheated to 750-1200 DEG C., with the temperature in the reaction zone 700-850 DEG C.
