Abstract
4,4-Dimethyl-meta-dioxan is produced from a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons having up to 4 carbon atoms in their molecules, the mixture containing isobutene and other olefines, by reacting the mixture under a pressure such that the partial pressure of isobutene in the mixture is from 1/50 to 15 atmospheres and at a temperature of 10 DEG to 85 DEG C. with formaldehyde in the presence of an aqueous solution of a strong mineral acid, the amount of formaldehyde used being more than 2 mols. per mol. of isobutene in the mixture, the quantity of water present being from 1 to 10 times the weight of formaldehyde used and the amount of strong mineral acid used being from 5 to 75% by weight of the total amount of water and formaldehyde. The formaldehyde may be used in the form of its polymers such as paraformaldehyde. The preferred hydrocarbon mixtures used as starting materials are the C4 and the C3 + C4 gas oil cracking frac tions which contain paraffinic hydrocarbons in addition to various olefines including isobutene.
