Abstract
Ethylbenzene is separated from, or concentrated in, hydrocarbon mixtures comprising ethylbenzene and a xylene by reacting said xylene with di-(alphachlorethyl) ether at -15 DEG C. to +15 DEG C. in presence of zinc chloride while limiting the water content of the mixture throughout the reaction to a value not exceeding 50 per cent by weight of the zinc chloride, and subjecting the mixture to fractional distillation. The reaction may be carried out by passing hydrogen chloride into a mixture of acetaldehyde, zinc chloride, and the hydrocarbon mixture, thus forming the ether in situ, or hydrogen chloride may be passed into a solution of acetaldehyde in the hydrocarbon mixture, the water layer formed being separated, and zinc chloride added to the other layer. Paraldehyde, or other substances yielding acetaldehyde, may replace the acetaldehyde. An example describes the reaction of a mixture of ethylbenzene and m-xylene with zinc chloride, hydrogen chloride and paraldehyde, the aqueous layer being separated, and the other layer fractionally distilled.
