Abstract

p-Cresol is separated from cresol mixtures by treating the mixtures with aqueous oxalic acid while subjecting them to azeotropic distillation until the water content has fallen to 0.5-1.8 mols. per mol. of p-cresol. The treatment results in the formation of the semi-ester of p-cresol and oxalic acid, which is separated from the mixture and then decomposed by treatment with water. Both the esterification and the decomposition may be effected in an organic solvent, e.g. benzene or benzine. Examples are given.
