Abstract
Alpha - chlorethyl - polymethyl benzenes are made by reacting di-(alpha-chlorethyl) ether with a polymethyl benzene having at least one nuclear hydrogen atom in presence of zinc chloride at -15 DEG C. to +15 DEG C., whilst limiting the water content of the mixture throughout the reaction to a value not exceeding 50 per cent by weight based on the weight of zinc chloride. The reaction is assisted by the presence of hydrogen chloride. The di-(alphachlorethyl) ether may be prepared in situ by reaction of hydrogen chloride with acetaldehyde or substances decomposable under the reaction conditions to give acetaldehyde, e.g. paraldehyde. In examples: (1) pure m-xylene, a commercial mixture of xylenes and a mixture of isomeric trimethylbenzenes containing mesitylene and pseudocumene are each reacted with anhydrous zinc chloride and paraldehyde, while passing in dry hydrogen chloride; (2) xylene is mixed with paraldehyde, the mixture is saturated with hydrogen chloride and the aqueous layer separated; the xylene solution of di-(alphachlorethyl) ether was then treated with zinc chloride. The products may be dehydrochlorinated to give styrene compounds. Specification 603,497 is referred to.
