Abstract
1,206,505. Acrylonitrile; cyanhydrins. OSTERREICHISCHE STICKSTOFFWERKE A.G. 10 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 22388/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] The reaction gases from the synthesis of acrylonitrile from propylene, ammonia and atmospheric oxygen are neutralized with aqueous sulphuric acid to give an impure solution of ammonium sulphate and this solution is treated with an extractant comprising one or more cyanhydrins of an aliphatic oxo-compound in which the cyanhydrins have up to four carbon atoms, the aqueous phase is separated from the organic phase and ammonium sulphate is obtained therefrom. The cyanhydrins may be obtained from the product of the acrylonitrile synthesis by hydrocyanation of the oxo-compounds so produced.
