Abstract

The invention comprises 1-phenyl-2-piperidino pentene-(3), 1-phenyl-2-piperidino-hexane and the o-, m- and p-methyl derivatives of 1-phenyl-2-piperidino-pentane and quaternary salts of these compounds; and comprises also a process for the preparation of tertiary amines of the formula <FORM:0814152/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group and Z is a straight or branched chain alkyl or alkenyl group with more than 2 carbon atoms by treating a nitrile of the formula <FORM:0814152/IV (b)/2> in the presence of a solvent with a benzyl magnesium halide which may be substituted in the phenyl ring by the group "R" and decomposing the reaction product by acidification. The Grignard reaction is preferably carried out in ether, benzene, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane or dibutyl ether or a mixture thereof. The products may be converted into quaternary ammonium compounds, for example by reaction with methyl bromide. Examples describe the preparation of 1-phenyl-2-piperidino-pentane and the corresponding quaternary methobromide and the above specified tertiary amino compounds. a -Piperidino-nitriles of the formula II, used as starting materials, such as a -piperidino-pentene-(2) nitrile, are made by conventional methods, for example by reacting an aldehyde of the formula Z-CHO with piperidine hydrochloride and an alkali metal cyanide in aqueous solution.
