Abstract

e -Caprolactams of formula <FORM:0895088/IV (b)/1> where R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, are prepared by heating the corresponding e -caprolactone with an aqueous solution containing a compound R-NH2, in a temperature range Tc to Tc+ 100 DEG C. where Tc is the critical temperature of water, at a pressure above the critical pressure of water. The reaction may be batchwise or continuous and the product is extracted with chloroform. Examples describe the preparation of e -caprolactam and the n-butyl and methyl caprolactams.
