Abstract

Polyamides are made by heating aminoacetic acid in a closed vessel, at a temperature of from 140 DEG to 180 DEG C., in the presence of water, in such proportions that at the temperature of the reaction the aminoacetic acid is present initially as a solid phase. Specified catalysts for the reaction are hydrochloric, nitric, sulphuric or phosphoric acids or ammonium salts thereof or sodium or potassium hydroxide. In the examples aminoacetic acid is condensed in the presence of: (1) water at 150 DEG C.; (2) hydrochloric acid at 140 DEG C.; (3) phosphoric acid at 140-150 DEG C.; (4) aqueous ammonium chloride at 150 DEG C.; and (5) aqueous sodium hydroxide at 150 DEG C.
