Abstract
Aminoalkylene phosphonic acids or salts thereof are prepared by reacting together in any order (a) ammonia or a primary or secondary amine, hydroxylamine or hydrazine or a salt of any of them, (b) an aldehyde or ketone, and (c) orthophosphorous acid or a salt thereof, the orthophosphorous acid or salt thereof being present in a proportion of at least 10% and preferably at least 20% by wt. greater than the stoichiometric requirement of the reaction. Suitable reactants and products are as disclosed in the parent Specification. The process also includes the reaction of a compound of any one of the foregoing three classes of compounds with the reaction product of compounds taken from each of the other two classes of compounds. The reaction may be effected in an acidic aqueous medium, preferably having a pH below 2 and containing from about 30% to about 60% by wt. of water, at an elevated temperature, generally from about 85 DEG C. to reflux temperatures, and preferably in the presence of from about 0.3 to about 20 wt. per cent of an ionic chloride catalyst.
