Abstract

N-Acylamino acids are prepared by reacting an amino acid, having at least one primary or secondary amino group, with a carboxylic acid chloride at an alkaline pH and in the presence of, at the start of the reaction, at least 5% (on weight of reaction mixture) of a free chloride or chlorides which is one or more of phosphorus trichloride, phosphorous pentachloride, phosphorus oxychloride, sulphonyl chloride or thionyl chloride. The process is applicable to a -amino carboxylic acids and may also be used for the acylation of other amino carboxylic acids, e.g. those containing, as additional substituents, amino, uinino, hydroxyl, carboxyl or thioalkyl groups, and for the acylation of amino sulphonic acid, e.g. taurine. The preferred acid chlorides are those derived from the saturated and unsaturated C10- 12 carboxylic acids. The amount of inorganic halide present in the reaction mixture is preferably no more than 15% by weight of reaction mixture. The acid chloride may be made by chlorinating the acid with one of the specified inorganic chlorides and the resulting reaction mixture containing unreacted inorganic halide used directly in the present process. Examples relate to N-lauryl-, N-stearyl-, N-cocoyl- and N-oleyl-sarcosines.
