Abstract
Potassium dichloroisocyanurate is prepared by reacting one molecular proportion of tripotassium isocyanurate, or the equivalent quantities of potassium hydroxide and dipotassium hydrogen isocyanurate, and substantially two molecular proportions of trichloroisocyanuric acid in an aqueous medium (e.g. water or aqueous potassium dichloroisocyanurate solution), the rate of addition of the reactants being such as to maintain a pH of 6,5-8,5, and a temperature of 0 DEG -60 DEG C. If the reaction temperature is above 56 DEG C. the product obtained is anhydrous potassium dichloroisocyanurate having internal and external monoclinic symmetry (designated Form I); below 52 DEG C. the product is potassium dichloroisocyanurate monohydrate, having internal and external triclinic symmetry, and this on dehydration is converted to another form (Form II) of anhydrous potassium dichloroisocyanurate, which has monoclinic internal symmetry and triclinic external symmetry. At reaction temperatures of 52 DEG -56 DEG C. the product is a mixture of monohydrate and Form I anhydrous salt; on dehydration this gives a mixture of Form I and Form II anhydrous salt.
