Abstract
Butadiene is prepared by reacting butenes under mild conditions with less chlorine than is necessary for complete saturation of the double bonds, leading the products at above 500 DEG C. with such a high rate of flow over catalysts promoting splitting off of hydrogen chloride that the gas is exposed to the catalyst for less than one second, and treating the crude butadiene obtained at elevated temperatures with agents capable of binding hydrogen chloride and then, if desired, with agents binding acetylene. With initial materials containing a high proportion of butenes, an amount of chlorine a few per cent lower than the theoretical is used; with low proportions of butenes, only about 80 per cent of the chlorine theoretically necessary. Reaction may be effected in the gaseous phase at not more than about 70 DEG C. or in the liquid phase at below - 50 DEG C. Butene-containing mixtures comprising, for example, n- and iso-butenes and butane may be used. The butylene chloride, preferably after removal of any dissolved butane or butenes by heating, may be passed over silica gel, bleaching earths or active carbon or filler bodies which become laden with lustrous carbon under reaction conditions. Pressure may be atmospheric or less, and diluent gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen or steam may be present. In an example, 250 g./hr. of the butylene chloride are passed at 625 DEG C. and 20 mm. over silica gel. The crude butadiene may be passed over lime, soda lime or sodium hydroxide at about 350 DEG C., then treated if necessary with copper or mercury compounds, e.g. ammoniacal cuprous salt solution, and finally distilled to yield a readily polymerizable product. The first Provisional Specification includes an example wherein the butylene chloride is led with water at 450 DEG C. and 1 atmos. over titanium dioxide. The second Provisional Specification includes the treatment of butylene chlorides from any source with the catalysts splitting off hydrogen chloride.
