Abstract
Petroleum oil containing mercaptans is sweetened by treating with an aqueous caustic alkali solution containing a solubility promoter and an inorganic oxidation catalyst comprising essentially the copper radical, in the presence of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in excess of the theoretical amount required for the conversion of mercaptans to disulphides. Air may be used as the oxygen-containing gas and caustic soda as the caustic alkali. Tar acids boiling above 230 DEG C. are referred to as the solubility promoter. Cupric chloride may be used to provide the copper radical. The bulk of the mercaptans may first be removed by treating the oil with an aqueous caustic alkali solution containing a solubility promoter; the aqueous solution may then be separated and regenerated by air-blowing with or without a catalyst. The oil may be contacted with 20 per cent by volume of 20 per cent w/v caustic alkali solution containing 11 per cent by volume of tar acids and 0.002 per cent by weight of copper (as metal). A temperature of up to 120 DEG F. may be used in the process. Petroleum distillates boiling up to 110 DEG C. may be treated.
