Abstract
The sulphur content of hydrocarbon oils, at least 50 vol. % boiling above 250 DEG C., is reduced by treating the oil with an organic peracid, or a mixture of organic acids and hydrogen peroxide such as to give rise to the formation of a peracid, to yield products containing both oxygen and sulphur, and subjecting the thus treated oil to a thermal after-treatment, preferably above 350 DEG C., which decomposes at least a proportion of said products to give hydrocarbons and volatile sulphur compounds. The hydrocarbon oil may be treated dissolved in a low-boiling organic solvent, for example benzene or carbon tetrachloride. Preferred oxidants are mixtures of hydrogen peroxide with formic or acetic acid. The thermal treatment may be effected in the presence of an alkaline material such as dolomite or lime.
