Abstract

Anhydrous hydrazine is prepared and preserved by contacting hydrazine with a dehydrating agent, followed by distillation of the resulting mixture to isolate the anhydrous hydrazine, both operations being effected in the presence solely of a liquid unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbon. Aromatic hydrocarbons referred to are benzene, toluene and xylene and mixtures thereof. Dehydrating agents may be caustic soda, potash, quick lime or barium oxide. The minimum amount of hydrocarbon employed may be calculated from a consideration of the vapour pressure curves of the respective hydrocarbon and hydrazine. An example refers to the production of anhydrous hydrazine by dehydration of hydrazine hydrate containing 63% hydrazine with quick lime in the presence of benzene and, after agitation of the mixture for one hour, distillation of the benzene and anhydrous hydrazine at 78 DEG -79 DEG C. for the major part of the distillation and finally at 92 DEG -96 DEG C. to effect maximum recovery of benzene. Specification 756,545 is referred to.
