Abstract

A process for obtaining 3 : 5-dimethyl phenol comprises selectively crystallizing this material in the form of its sodium salt from a solution of a coal tar fraction containing the same in a non-polar organic solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon such as naphtha or xylole. Preferably only a portion of the phenolic material present in the coal tar phenol fraction is converted to the sodium salt. The latter may be formed by adding hot concentrated aqueous sodium hydroxide to the heated phenol fraction, preferably only sufficient sodium hydroxide being employed to form the sodium salts of one half of the substituted phenolic material present. Examples are furnished.
