Abstract

An alkyl hydroxy aromatic compound is converted to a product which includes the corresponding hydroxy aromatic compound by reacting said alkyl hydroxy compound in the presence of an alkyl aromatic compound corresponding to said alkyl hydroxy aromatic compound with at least about one mol of hydrogen per mol of said alkyl hydroxy aromatic compound at a temperature of 482 DEG to 871 DEG C. The conversion of para-cresol to phenol in the presence of toluene is described.
