Abstract

311,299. Gordon, K., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Jan. 31, 1928. Hydrogen.-In freeing hydrogen or gases containing it from carbon dioxide by scrubbing with water or an aqueous solution under pressure the pressure is released from the resultant solution in separate stages or to a limited extent so that a gas richer in hydrogen than that in solution is first obtained. The first gas fraction or fractions may be compressed again to the original pressure and returned to the washing process. Aqueous solutions of substances which increase the solubility of carbon dioxide or decrease the solubility of the other components of the gaseous mixture,. or both, may be used in the scrubbing. The carbon dioxide finally evolved may be used for carbonating ammonia liquor in making ammonium sulphate from gypsum. The scrubbing may be effected at about 200 atmospheres pressure; the first reduction may be to about 25 atmospheres and the final reduction, which may be carried out in a Pelton wheel, may be to 1 atmosphere. Examples are given in the Specification.
