Hydrogen, catalytic production of from mixtures of methane and steam.-In the production of hydrogen by treatment of methane with steam the conditions are regulated so that 2-15 per cent of methane remains in the gas obtained. This methane is subsequently removed either by washing with solvents or by converting it by means of air or oxygen. The carbon monoxide which is formed is removed by converting the greater part of it, by means of steam, into carbon dioxide and removing the latter by means of solvents. Remaining traces of monoxide are then removed by washing with a cuprous salt solution or by reconverting into methane. Alternatively, the reaction product may be purified by washing with liquid nitrogen.
