Abstract
311,271. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. May 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Manganese dioxide containing from 90-100 per cent MnO2 is produced by heating manganese carbonate or bicarbonate or a mixture of the two to 250-600‹ C. in the presence of excess oxygen under a higher partial pressure than that of the oxygen in air at atmospheric pressure. Alternatively, the product obtained by roasting manganese carbonate in air at 250-450‹ C. may be used in the process. Oxygen or air enriched with oxygen may be used at atmospheric pressure at 250-500‹ C., or air enriched with oxygen at elevated pressure at 250-600‹ C. Decomposition may be effected in a heated tube by a countercurrent stream of gas, and the latter may flow round a closed circuit comprising means to extract carbon dioxide, steam, or other undesired gases, and means for replenishing the supply of oxygen. Alternatively a pressure vessel may be employed. In examples manganese carbonate or a mixture thereof with the bicarbonate precipitated by sodium carbonate or ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate is treated at pressures of 1-100 atmospheres and temperatures of 270-550‹ C.; and an air roasted product containing 57.3 per cent MnO2 is oxidized at 500‹ C. under a pressure of 25 atmospheres.
