Abstract
319,433. Rowell, S. W., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. July 7, 1928. Acetic acid.-Acetaldehyde in a 10-25 per cent solution in acetic acid is oxidized to acetic acid in a continuous process by means of air or oxygen in extremely finely divided form, such as is obtained by passing the gas through a porous plate or similar device for producing minute bubbles. The process mav be carried out in a tower in which the solution of acetaldehyde rests on a porous plate through which the oxidizing gas is forced from below. The solution may be obtained by mixing acetaldehyde in liquid or in vapour form with acetic acid in the upper part. of the tower, or by treating it with acetic acid in countercurrent in a separate tower. The reaction. may be conducted at atmospheric or higher pressure, and the oxidation tower may be provided. with heating or cooling coils. The gases escap-- ing from the oxidation tower may be freed from. acetaldehyde vapour by washing with acetic acid,. the washings being added to the liquid. undergoing oxidation.
