Abstract
Methane is prepared by the interaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen-containing gases at atmospheric pressure over a nickel catalyst maintained at a temperature above 500 DEG C. To permit of the use of this temperature, which is substantially higher than that usually employed, the rate of flow of the gas mixture is adjusted to ensure rapid removal of the product from the reaction zone. The gases may be passed over one or more catalysts arranged in series, or the process may be operated cyclically. Examples are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the reaction may be carried out at a temperature of 400 DEG C. or above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
