Abstract

639,109. Coating with metals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 23, 1948, No. 16880. Convention date, July 3, 1947. [Class 82(ii)] Coatings of germanium are formed on solid surfaces by introducing finely divided germanium oxide into the reducing portion of a low-velocity gas flame and directing the tip of the flame on to the surface to be coated. The reducing cone 5 of a flame from a Bunsen burner 1 is brought into contact with germanium dioxide contained in a shallow quartz container 7 and the tip 11 of the flame directed on to a glass sheet 10. The surface to be coated may be mounted in thermal contact with a block of copper or other metal of high thermal conductivity to obtain a thick coating. Coatings may also be produced on metal surfaces, wood and resins and germanium monoxide may be employed instead of the dioxide.
