Abstract
736,777. Treating titanium surfaces. ESTERBROOK PEN CO. June 5, 1951 [June 9, 1950], No. 13344/51. Classes 72 and 82 (2). [Also in Groups XV and XXII] Pen nibs, composed wholly of titanium, are hardened, preferably at a temperature of approximately 1350‹ C., in an atmosphere containing gases which include a hardening agent such as oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and/or carbon so as to form a coating of nitride, hydride, oxide, or carbide of titanium. Intense heat may be supplied by a flame, by electrical resistance transmitted by conduction or radiation or high-frequency induction heating, the time of heat application being between two and thirty seconds. The hardening produced is a surface hardening diminishing rapidly toward the centre of the nib body. The nib may be inserted between metal rolls 11 and 12, Fig. 18, during heating and supported by clampng members 13a on a conveyer, the metal rolls serving as a heat conducting shield.
