Abstract
887,506. Surface hardening. PLASMA FLAME CORPORATION. July 27, 1959 [Sept. 18, 1958], No. 25649/59. Class 72. [Also in Group XI] A process of surface hardening steel comprises directing a free plasma stream into contact with the steel and then quenching. As shown, a free plasma stream may be produced by passing a gas, e.g. nitrogen, from a connection 37 through a tube 38 to distributing passages 39 into a space 36. The gas then passes between an electrode 28, of frusto-conical shape, and a nozzle 32 of platinum, silver or copper. An arc is struck between the electrodes and the nozzle and the gas is converted into a free plasma, and, by varying the gas flow the position of the arc in the nozzle may be adjusted. The free plasma is directed against the steel to be heated and, since the plasma may have a temperature of about 16,500‹F. heating is very rapid. The heated piece is then quenched and a hardened surface less than <SP>3</SP>/ 32 inch thick may be produced. The apparatus may be water-cooled, the water being introduced through the electric supply cables. Specification 863,189, is referred to.
