Abstract
882,692. Flame hardening. PEDDING- HAUS, P. C., and PEDDINGHAUS, W., [trading as PEDDINGHAUS P. F. [firm of]]. March 26, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 10628/59. Class 72. Flame and quench heads are separated by nozzles which direct a non-combustible gas towards the quenching agent emerging from the quench head. As shown, burners 2 which extend parallel to the axis of the work and are adjustable in length, heat workpiece 1 travelling in direction X. It is oil quenched at 3 by a quench ring towards which non- combustible gas is directed from nozzles 6 of anular pipe 7. Heating and quenching heads 4 and 5 anneal the workpiece and another annular pipe 8 directs a non-combustible gas towards the work to remove surplus oil before flame head 4 is reached. The apparatus may be used for surface hardening but is particularly suitable for hardening right through a shaft and for hardening threaded spindles.
