Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the mounting of a strip ring easier, by hardening to a desired hardness only the bottom portion of a groove, to which the strip ring is mounted, through a use of a heat source in which electrodes are not brought into connection but a high energy density is produced.
CONSTITUTION: A nontransfer arc discharge as a heat source of a high energy density makes use of a plasma jet 70 which is produced by connecting an in-torch central electrode 71 to a negative electrode and also connecting a nozzle 72 surrounding in an electrically noncontacting fashion the central electrode 71 to a positive electrode, and then by blowing an inert gas 8 such as argon against an arc produced between both electrodes. Since an item 1 to be heated is not connected to the electrodes, the plasma jet 70 of the high energy density is attracted toward the item 1 without diversion and can perform a prompt local heating of a bottom portion 51 of a groove 5. Upon suddenly quenching the bottom portion 51, the bottom portion 51 can be hardened to a desired degree of hardness. Acconrdingly, without deforming the bottom portion 51, a strip ring (not illustrated) can be smoothly mounted into the mounting groove 5.
