Abstract
717,865. Iron manufacture. OESTERREICHISCH-ALPINE MONTANGES. March 12, 1952 [March 13, 1951151No. 6397/52. Class 72 A device for converting pig iron to steel in which an oxidizing gas is blown against the surface of the metal bath comprises an additional pipe, opening in the upper part of the converter and supplying an oxidizing gas which does not impinge on the surface of the bath. As shown a converter 1 has a pipe 4 supplying oxidizing gas which impinges on the surface 5 of the bath and an additional pipe 7, the open end 8 of which penetrates a short distance into the converter, the oxidizing gas from which burns the carbon monoxide produced at the surface of the melt and maintains a high temperature near the mouth of the converter. The pipe 7 may be adjustable in position and may be removed with the pipe 4 when the conversion is complete
