Abstract
Basic Bessemer steel is dephosphorized by the addition of caustic soda to the metal in the converter at the end of the converting operation. The caustic soda, in amount 1.5 to 3.5 kg. per ton of steel, may be added after the converter has been turned down and, preferably, deslagged, the converter being returned to the blowing position and blown for 15-20 seconds or powdered caustic soda may be suspended in the blast. The process is stated to reduce phosphorus from 0.06 per cent to 0.02 per cent and oxygen from 0.095 per cent to 0.058 per cent. Specification 654,672 is referred to.
