Abstract
Metallic material is sulphurized (to a matte) by introducing into the metallic melt elementary sulphur in a state of fine dispersion by means of a carrier gas (e.g. nitrogen, CO, CO2, air), or in vapour form; and a Ni-Cu matte thus produced may be readily worked up by means of CO into Ni carbonyl.ALSO:Metallic material is sulphurized (to a matte) by introducing into the metallic melt elementary sulphur in a state of fine dispersion by means of a carrier gas (e.g. nitrogen, CO, CO2, air), or in vapour form. A Ni-Cu matte so produced may be readily worked up by means of CO into Ni carbonyl. The sulphur and carrier gas may be led into the metal melt by a resistant pipe of e.g. carbon, ceramic, or plated iron; and the melt preferably has a slag covering. Conveniently the sulphur &c. may enter through the air nozzles of the converter containing the melt.
