Abstract

In the conversion of pig iron by blowing an oxidizing gas on to the surface of a molten metal bath so that the gas pressure at the surface does not exceed 0.75 kg./cm.2, the quantity of oxygen supplied is regulated without affecting the jet energy and at the same time keeping constant the quantity of gas blown on to the surface. When the amount of oxygen is reduced it may be replaced by argon or another nitrogen-free gas. The amount of oxygen may be regulated during the entire process and particularly towards the end to control the amount of oxygen in the finished steel. Specification 712,213 is referred to.
