Abstract

Iron or steel is desulphurized in a vessel not provided with tuyeres at its base by forming a slag the lime:silica ratio of which is not greater than 2.5 and maintaining oxidizing conditions at the surface of the slag such that the ratio of CO2:CO in the gas-phase is not less than 10. The oxidizing conditions may be maintained either by blowing oxygen into the vessel at an impingement pressure on the bath of not more than 0.01 atmosphere, or by adding fine-grained iron oxide.
