Abstract
In the refining of steel there is added to the bath of oxidized steel an amount of carbon greater than that required to reduce all the iron oxide, the excess carbon is then measured and the amount in excess of that required is oxidized. The excess carbon may be oxidized by the addition of gaseous oxygen, carbon dioxide, or a mixture thereof, or by the addition of metallic oxides, e.g. iron or manganese oxides. The bath may be heated internally during the process or substances which react exothermally with oxygen, e.g. silicon, may be added to the bath; in the latter case sufficient oxygen must be added to oxidize these substances as well as the excess carbon. The process is stated to remove dissolved nitrogen and hydrogen from the steel, and may be carried out in a converter.
