Abstract

Pig-iron is refined by blowing an oxidizing gas on to the surface of the melt for at least part of the conversion time in such a manner that the gas pressure on the surface of the melt is kept below 0.75 kg./sq. cm. The gas jet may be in the form of a cone having a diameter at the surface at least three times the diameter of the nozzle orifice, or the nozzle may be maintained at a distance of at least 150 mm. from the bath surface. The slag layer may be broken by commencing with a higher pressure and then reducing it, or by the use of a jet of reacting or non-reacting gases below the surface of the melt, the reduced pressure being used after one third of the conversion time.
