Abstract

<PICT:1006274/C6-C7/1> A process for melting ferrous metal in a cupola 1 comprises feeding jets of oxygen 9 into the cupola charge through nozzles 7 separate from but at the level of the main air tuyeres 5, so that the oxygen jets 9 impinge on different regions of the charge from that of the main air streams 8. The nozzles may be located within the main air tuyeres, the oxygen and air streams issuing at divergent horizontal or vertical angles of at least 5 degrees.
