Abstract
919,402. Lances; feeding granular material. ARBED, ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH-DUDELANGE S.A. May 3, 1961 [May 18, 1960], No. 15995/61. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). A metallurgical lance has a nozzle mounted in the end of a central tube, which end is surrounded by a spaced apart cooling jacket. As shown, the end tube 4 is screwed into a portion 3 of the central tube 1, and has its lower part 7 fitted down against the horizontal shoulder 10 of the cooling jacket 9. The nozzle 13 is of abrasive material, and has a tapered lower portion 12 fitted into the inside tapered surface of the lower part 7 of tube 4, and is set into tube 4 at its top edge 11. Between the nozzle 13 and tube 4 is an air space 18 which may be filled with sand or cement 19, and between tube 4 and the cooling jacket is an air space 15 which may convey gases down to a passage 17 in the nozzle. Another embodiment has the lower exterior portion of tube 4 following the line of the upper portion, there being only a small gap between this portion of tube 4 and the cooling jacket. In this embodiment and the following ones there are no connecting passages 17. Another embodiment has an outwardly tapering end to tube 4 to form a close fit with the lower end of the cooling jacket, and in the final embodiment the lower end of the nozzle 13 is formed horizontally across at the level of the bottom of tube 4.
