Abstract

<PICT:1010275/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1010275/C6-C7/2> Powdered lime, ore or fluorspar, is added to the melt in an open hearth furnace in a low velocity stream directed into a zone where the oxygen of a high velocity stream disperses. Air borne solids from a device which can be moved to draw material from any of a row of hoppers, are delivered to the central passage 30 of a water cooled lance, Fig. 2, high pressure oxygen being fed to the outer passage 26. The lance nozzle, Fig. 4, has a number of oxygen delivery passages 34 surrounding the central passage 30, and auxiliary passages 36 connect the central passage 30 and passages 34. The lance can be raised and lowered through the furnace roof, and the volume of oxygen delivered through the central passage is not made than 10% of that delivered through the outer openings 34.
