Abstract

1,203,613. Oxygen lances. ARBED, ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICHDUDELANGE S.A. 15 Aug., 1967 [4 Oct., 1966], No. 37561/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] A water cooled oxygen lance for a top blowing process, has a central conduit 1 through which a primary oxygen stream which may contain pulverulent or granular solid material in suspension, is provided, and a concentric outer conduit 2 for the supply of secondary oxygen. The primary oxygen stream which effects the decarburization of the melt is supplied through a long-necked converging-diverging member 11, 12, whilst the secondary oxygen stream, effecting dephosphorization of the melt, is supplied through semihelical channels 3 of semicircular cross-section machined into the outside of the member 12, to form a non-mingling giratory envelope around the primary oxygen stream. Both the angle of inclination of the channels 3, or the area of their cross-section may be varied throughout their length. Replacement of the members 11 or 12 may be effected while the lance is in an operating position, simply by breaking one weld 8, and removing the external reinforcing member 6 to obtain access to the members 11 or 12. Variation of the flow rate of the secondary oxygen stream allows variation of the spread of the gas jet issuing from the lance and so control over the dephosphorization of the melt independently of its decarburization.
