Abstract

<PICT:1014803/C6-C7/1> In a process for the treatment of molten ferrous metal with oxygen and solid reagents the latter in the form of powder are fed through the inner tube of a concentric double lance, while a high pressure stream of oxygen is fed through the other tube, which terminates in a nozzle so shaped that mixing of the powder with the oxygen stream occurs before the latter contacts the metal surface. Solid materials used include lime, fluorspar, iron ore, desulphurizing agents, alloying elements or carbon, and the feed may be assisted by a flow of atmospheric air. The process may also be applied to mixed charges of molten metal and solid scrap, the latter melting as the reaction proceeds. A suitable apparatus illustrated comprises a tube 10 attached to the base of closed hopper 11, the bottom 12 of which is of porous material to permit the influx of air. Tube 10 is surrounded by tube 13 through which oxygen is supplied by inlet 14 and which is restricted in diameter at its lower end 15 to form annular nozzle 16. Tube 10 is tapered at its lower end whereby nozzle 16 produces sub-atmospheric pressure at the end of tube 10.
