Abstract
In a process for the production of successive batches of steel from charges of iron or steel scrap with or without molten iron, the charge is heated in the presence of a lime-containing flux by means of an oxidizing flame and is then refined with a stream of oxygen-containing gas, the initial slag being removed at the end of the heating stage or early in the refining stage and further lime-containing flux being introduced to form a second slag which is retained in the vessel at the end of the refining to form the initial slag for a new charge. The refining gas may be fed in a high pressure stream through the outer passage of a coaxial double lance, a low pressure stream of fuel gas or suspension of liquid fuel in carrier gas being supplied through the inner passage during the heating stage. During the refining stage powdered fluxing materials may be added in a low pressure stream of inert gas, oxygen or fuel gas; if desired carbonaceous material may be mixed with the flux, which may include iron oxide, aluminium oxide and fluorspar. In an alternative method of heating, oil under pressure may be delivered to a nozzle which atomizes it into the oxygen stream. Specification 799,943 is referred to.
