Abstract
Iron for the production of castings is produced by melting a solid charge by means of a fuel-oxygen burner, refining by blowing with oxygen in the presence of a lime-based flux and simultaneouly or subsequently recarburizing the metal by the addition of powdered carbonaceous material. The process may be carried out in a converter or in a ladle and the fluxing constituents, which may include fluorspar and iron oxide, may be added at least partially in the oxygen stream. Carburization may then be brought about by the injection of powdered carbonaceous material such as graphite in an inert gas. Alternatively carburization and refining may be carried out simultaneously by using separate jets or two passages of a multiple jet; fluxing materials may be dispensed into the oxygen stream and carbonaceous material into an inert gas stream, which may be nitrogen, or all of the solid matter may be added with the inert gas. Carbon in powdered form may also be added during the melting step to reduce the melting point of the charge; it may be mixed with flux materials or with ferro-silicon. When carburization is complete any necessary alloying additions may be made, possibly by injection in a stream of inert gas.
